Coloplast SenSura® Mio is Extended Wear in the US

Ostomates now have access to a new option, as a recent patient survey showed that SenSura Mio reduces leakage while matching or outperforming the wear time of other extended wear products1.

Coloplast's SenSura® Mio ostomy system has been approved in the US for extended wear use, which represents the majority of the US ostomy barrier market2.

"Although the brand was initially launched into the standard wear category, new data shows SenSura Mio is a great option for those seeking an extended wear product," said Manu Varma, President and SVP of Chronic Care North America.

A recent survey of nearly 2,400 patients demonstrated that SenSura Mio reduces leakage while matching or outperforming the wear time of other extended wear products1. When combined with its full-circle filter, discreet neutral-gray textile, wide outlet, and unique BodyFit Technology, SenSura Mio is now an option for ostomates seeking an extended wear solution that also addresses their concerns around leakage.

Key clinical studies have found:

  • 91% of ostomates worry to some degree about leakage3
  • 76% of ostomates experienced leakage on some level ranging from a very high degree to a low degree4

A secure fit to the body is important to reducing leakage, and SenSura Mio was designed to fit individual bodies. BodyFit Technology is an elastic adhesive technology that is unique to SenSura® Mio barriers, which adheres securely to the body for protection and provides a flexible fit during movement.

"Patients1, clinicians5, and lab-based data6 confirmed what we have suspected: SenSura Mio performs very well in the extended wear market," added Varma. "We believe in the strength of our innovative products and are proud more patients in the US now have access to our reliable extended wear solution offered with SenSura Mio."

Funds will support charitable organizations that offer programs focused on developing science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) skills in underserved populations in the Twin Cities community.

Coloplast announced today that between now and December 2022 it is awarding $150,000 in grants to nonprofits in the Twin Cities. The goal is to help address inequities and bring about positive change in the lives of underrepresented members of the Twin Cities community, specifically people of color (BIPOC). Through this new program $50,000 will go toward a strategic partnership with one local nonprofit. Additional grant dollars will also be available via Coloplast's new community grant program, which will award grants to Twin Cities-based charitable organizations that offer programs focused on developing science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) skills in youth and adult groups.

"Coloplast is committed to being an active and meaningful participant in our local community," said Manu Varma, President at Coloplast. "We recognize there is a critical need in the Twin Cities, especially among underserved and underrepresented members of our BIPOC communities. With our North American headquarters located in North Minneapolis, we want to help create lasting and impactful ways to bring about positive change. We will do that by partnering with and supporting organizations that help develop the next generation of healthcare industry professionals in the Twin Cities."

The new community engagement program includes two components: a strategic, year-long partnership with one local Twin Cities nonprofit and a new community grant program. Through the new strategic community partnership program, Coloplast has selected The Boys & Girls Club of the Twin Cities, awarding the organization $50,000, which will fund its Academic Success programming at the Jerry Gamble Club, located in North Minneapolis. In addition, Coloplast employees will volunteer at the Club and youth at the Club will have access to Coloplast via various opportunities throughout the year. This strategic community partnership will run through December 2022.

"The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Twin Cities are incredibly honored to partner with Coloplast in building and enhancing the STEM skills of young people in North Minneapolis," said Terryl Brumm, President & CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of the Twin Cities. "Strong STEM programming develops the critical thinking, problem solving, decision-making, and technology literacy skills necessary for our youth to succeed in the 21st century."

The intent of the new community grant program is to help prepare and develop the next generation of healthcare industry professionals in underserved communities by awarding grants to organizations that offer educational programs focused on developing STEM or medical industry-related skills. Funds will be prioritized toward programming that benefits underserved communities and North Minneapolis residents. Grants will be awarded annually, starting in early 2022 and the application period opens September 1, 2021.

"Coloplast's vision is to set the standard of listening and responding," added Varma. "Over the past year, we have taken great efforts to understand what the needs are in our local community. With this new program, we are helping all members of our community have more equal opportunities to succeed."

Coloplast completes minority investment in Francis Medical

Coloplast announced today that it has completed a USD 4m (DKK 25m) equity investment in Francis Medical, an early stage company pioneering urological cancer treatments, beginning with prostate cancer.

Founded in 2018, Minneapolis-based Francis Medical is a privately held company committed to developing minimally invasive urological cancer treatments. The foundation of the company is a tribute to and legacy of the inventor’s father, Francis Hoey, whose life was ended by prostate cancer with treatments that had harsh implications on his normal daily living.

The platform technology utilizes water vapor energy to ablate targeted cancerous tissue while preserving surrounding structures, potentially minimizing the side effects often experienced with other cancer treatments.

The investment fits with Coloplast’s strategy to pursue organic and inorganic growth opportunities in the Interventional Urology business. Francis Medical in particular and the prostate cancer segment in general align with the Interventional Urology’s strategic direction, bringing innovative solutions to the urology market.

“We are proud to be supporting life-changing technologies in growing urology segments. As part of our long-term strategy we are exploring multiple areas for investment and growth, and we are excited about providing solutions in Men’s Health segments like prostate cancer,” said Steve Blum, President of Interventional Urology.

Coloplast is dedicated to making life easier for people with intimate healthcare needs and advancing the treatment of prostate cancer supports that mission. The investment in Francis Medical will help the company continue to develop their minimally invasive solution and help Coloplast Interventional Urology continue to grow its presence in the market with customers and patients.

“There is a large unmet need for patients seeking treatment alternatives with fewer side effects than radiation or a radical prostatectomy. We are working to address that unmet need and are excited to have the support of a leader in urology like Coloplast to improve the treatment of prostate cancer,” said Mike Kujak, CEO of Francis Medical.

For more information on Francis Medical please refer to www.francismedical.com.
